Boys Program Overview

Thank you for your interest in the HKYLA Boys youth lacrosse program!

Our boys program welcomes boys in grades K-8. The program is taught on a graduated scale, with age-appropriate lessons and drills. Our goal is to not only create a fun, fast paced environment to play lacrosse in, but to also build personal qualities that will help these boys in the ‘real world’ as they age and progress in whatever they are passionate about. Teamwork, effort, positive attitude, resilience and independent growth are the foundation for success on and off the field.

Team Age Ranges

8U: Grades K, 1, 2

10U: Grades 3, 4

12U: Grades 5, 6

14U: Grades 7, 8

No prior experience is required.

The season starts in March and ends in mid-June. Every team will have 2-3 practices per week starting in March, and typically 1 game per week starting after April 1. This varies by age.

Based on several factors, such as coaching staff and team sizes, it's possible a team might fill up and you may need to join a waitlist.

The exact structure of each team will be determined each year based on how many players sign up per grade.

Boys Program Overview

Game rules for youth girls are very different from youth boys and is typically a source of frustration and confusion for new families.

We encourage you to review the rulebook as published by USA Lacrosse. We have provided a link here for convenience.  USA Lacrosse's website has a multitude of resources for those new to the game.

USA Lacrosse Rulebook for Youth Boys

The boys play by a graduated rule system- to ensure safety and game understanding first, and progress into standardizing High School rule by 7/8 grade.

8U boys will start out on a compressed field (60y x 35y) and play 6v6. Contact will be very minimal, and there will be no goalies. Coaches are allowed on the field if agreed upon and refs will typically stop the game to teach the players what they can and can’t do during a rule violation.

10U boys will graduate to 7v7 on the field and add goalies. There will be a minimum pass rule at each game to ensure the boys understand game concepts. Refs will still stop and explain rules to players, but there will be no ‘do overs’.

12U boys will be playing on a full size field, or something close to it (110yX60y this could vary approximately +/- 10y). There will be no minimum pass rule, more contact is allowed and the players will be in a 10v10 format. There will be possession counts for moving the ball from one side of the field to the other, and clearing the ball from the crease.

14U boys will play as close to High School rules as possible on a full size field. There are no ‘soft/lenient’ counts for possession, and the boys will be integrated into the full rule set before they graduate out of the program.

Below is a list of local private clubs for youth boys that also hold various clinics and tryouts throughout the year.
